Room 2 - Day Out? Idea

It has been suggested that we go for a class trip to Quail Island later in the term when other classes are visiting the A and P Show.

What are some of the things we need to do to make this happen?

Brainstorm what you think and list your ideas in your journal
Then look at the secret list

  • Book a date with the ferry company
  • Work out the cost
  • Get permission from Mr. Dolan
  • Work out the risk management for the day
  • Write a letter to parents for permission, payment and help
  • Make a list of the gear we would need to take
  • Plan some activities for the day

Wonders of the World

Mt Everest

Watch this short video
Use a whole page in your learning journal to take notes about this great mountain
Include keywords, dates, people, measurements, 10 to 20 facts, pictures, diagrams, colour

Make your notes memorable.

The Grand Canyon

Note Taking Skills

Watch this short youtube video and then in your journal create a page of notes that include the top 10 facts that stood out most for you. (yes you can watch the video more than once)

Don't try and get all the information or just copy it word for word.

Be thoughtful and decide what's important.  Just write down keywords and ideas then use some colour and add some illustrations or a diagram as part of your notes.

Using your previous planning decide on a holiday experience that you will write about to inform and entertain the class.

This writing can take the form of:
a short retell
a report like a newspaper
a poem
a song
a recipe

All these should include vivid description and some attempts at two or three of the language features listed above. Have fun. Be creative. Experiment with words. Make an ordinary experience stand out like a neon sign  (hey is that a simile?).

The Great Wall

The Great Wall of China
step 1. note taking

In your journal draw and note down the keywords and facts about the Great Wall - in 20 minutes.

what, where, when, why, who, how
The Great Wall of China is made up of a number of different sections.
These sections were built over a long period of time from stone and other materials.
They were built to protect against attacks and invasions from the north.

The Great Wall of China stretches around 6300 kilometres in length.
If you measure the length of all the different sections of wall, the distance is more like 22000 kilometres

The Great Wall of China is the longest structure ever built by humans.
The widest section of the wall is around 9 metres
The highest point of the wall is around 8 metres

The first parts of the wall were built over 2000 years ago.

A large number of workers have lost their lives while building the wall.

Earlier sections of the wall were made from stone, wood and compacted earth.

While some parts of the wall have been preserved or renovated, other parts have been vandalised or destroyed to make way for construction.

Rumours that astronauts can see the Great Wall of China from the Moon with the naked eye are untrue.
